Joanna Newsom is a harpist and songwriter from Nevada City, California. She writes and performs modern—somewhat experimental—folk music with complex and poetic lyrics, and has been noted as a prominent part of the “New Weird America” movement. Newsom has recorded and performed with a number of other projects such as San Francisco indie group The Pleased and experimental duo Nervous Cop. This is alongside her own independent groups such as the one-off Joanna Newsom and the Ys Street Band, the collaborative result of touring the album Ys.
